Hades is the god of the Underworld, and very well deserves to be. Kronos, his father swallowed him and his brothers, worried they would overthrow him. After a while, Zeus tricked Kronos into throwing them up and they fought their father for the world and won. The brothers divided the world up, and Hades got the Underworld, leaving him the only god to leave Mount Olympus (Gill 1). Since Hades was the god of the underworld, not many liked to utter his name, so they called him Plouton, which is the Greek word for wealth. Therefore, Hades is the god of the underworld and wealth (GreekMythology). Hades is as important the devil is to us. Hades was married to Persephone, daughter of Zeus, which makes her his niece (GreekMythology). Hades is often pictured with a pitchfork, which he used to cause earthquakes and cause destruction from the underworld (GreekMythology). He also had a three headed dog he is sometimes pictured with, Cerberus. The dog would guard the underworld for Hades and protect it. Many Greek gods and goddesses have stories that compare to the bible. For example, in Hades life, when he made Persephone eat the “forbidden fruit” that compares to Adam and Eve being persuaded by the devil and banished from the garden. Persephone was banished from Mount Olympus like Eve was from the Garden of Eden (Greekgodsandgoddesses). Also, when Hades and his brothers were born, their father swallowed them up like Jonah and the whale. After Hades escaped his father’s bowels, he was sent to the underworld, like Jonah to Nineveh (Gill). Hades means invisible in ancient Greek, which goes along with a helmet he owned. This helmet had the ability to make him invisible. It was made by Hephaestus and stolen from the Titans by Hades (AncientHistoryEncyclopedia). Hades is nicknamed the “Unseen One” or “Invisible One.” He is often seen in pictures with the helmet on and holding a cornucopia full of valuable gems. The helmet is a symbol of Hades, along with silver, gold, and the planet Pluto, because of his alternative name
