The Large Hadron Collider 17|09|2017 – 01|10|2017 By: Rhea Sharma What is the Hadron Collider? The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is known as the most powerful particle accelerator that exists today. After an upgrade, the LHC now operates at an energy which is now about 7 times greater than any previous machine built to date. It is based at CERN 's particle physics laboratory near Switzerland. CERN is known as the worlds largest laboratory and is dedicated to pursuit fundamental science. The LHC allows scientists to be able to reproduce the conditions that had existed within a billionth of a second after the Big Bang. It can do this by hurling beams of protons and ions at immense speeds close to the speed of light. This is believed to be what …show more content…

In particular, the LHC benefits most in the medical field. For example, around 22 million people almost every year experience diagnosis through using radiopharmaceuticals and the PET scan. The detectors that are used in the PET scan were initially made as particle detectors to be able to aid experiments on the LHC. While there are many advantages to do with the Hadron Collider there is also a negative side to that which can be solely based off of global factors. For example, some disadvantages of the Hadron Collider do relate to the global factor economical. It relates to it as the Hadron Collider is incredibly expensive to construct and be able to maintain. The LHC also uses hundred thousands of dollars for only electricity per day and takes up an immense amount of space. To be able to power the LHC to make it work a large supply of liquid helium is needed to be able to cool the magnets so that they become superconducting. Since the LHC has helped with new technology, its technology can be used to make new weapons worse than atomic bombs that can result in a lot of damage. Also because of the new technology people may have yet to understand the results of the LHC. Economic
