A vigorously debated topic in our time is the issue of sustainability. This climate change, overpopulation, pollution, and ignorance about the damage being done to the environment. Sometimes farmers use too many resources inefficiently, they may use pesticides or have factories that pollute as they get the produce ready for shipping. Sustainable farming is a concept that has become known due to our need for sustainable solutions. By growing food closer to where people consume, we will decrease transportation miles and provide inner-city jobs that will help combat the problems of food cost or employment. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) are important to help achieve sustainability. Amy Hammon’s essay “A Race to Save the Orange by Alteringits DNA” makes this idea clear. Hammon’s states that scientists are in agreement that in order to combat a citrus greening we will have to depend on genetic engineering. A scientists from the University of Florida told Mr. Kress “People are either going to drink transgenic orange juice or they’ve going to drink apple juice” (pg. 40). Many naturally grown crops do not exist for long, due to they’re infection and contamination of trees. Sustainable agriculture faces many challenges, and solving these problems will require collaboration among, many groups including farmers, consumers, industries, and policymakers. Although keeping something sustainable requires great effort, the benefits of the outcome is worth the hard work. Our society needs to become aware of the importance of sustainability and the impact it will have now and for future generations. We need to be aware of how many resources we are currently using, and accept that if we don’t take any action, these resources will not be available for future generations. By acknowledging this problem, people will see the importance of sustainability, support sustainable efforts, and even come up with sustainable solutions for different
