I am going to do this by incorporating what I believe to be right as well as a deeper understand to what the meaning of good and self sufficiency is. In this section of Book I, it states that “the highest good, on the other hand, must be something final. Thus, if there is only one final end, this will be the good we are seeking; if there are several it will be the most final and perfect of them”. Meaning that people see happiness as a destination rather than a way of living. It also states that we use honor, pleasure, intelligence and virtue as a means to acquire such happiness. I believe that happiness is way more than just a destination to make your life seem better. Happiness is a choice, it is as simple as that. One chooses to be happy with what they have rather than what they want. It is when people use things such as honor and pleasure that happiness becomes a destination and an end in itself. This section also states that we choose honor, pleasure, intelligence and virtue partly for themselves because nothing else arises from them. This statement is incredibly false. For one, we do not choose to be intelligent, honorable, to have pleasure or virtue. Those are all things that we as humans work hard to acquire and receive. Secondly, more can arise from these four things. With intelligence, one may solve a question or problem that has stood out for many years. If one is honorable, people will respect what they have to say and comply with them even if they might not fully agree. It gives examples that a shoemaker has the function of making shoes and that a carpenter has the function of making things out of wood, but a man does not have a specific function. I strongly disagree with this. I think that men and women in general have specific functions that may change in day to day doings.
