Before the Edicts, the Jesuits had made incredible progress. By 1582, Japan had about 250 Churches, over 200,000 converts and the numbers continued to grow. In 1610 the Catholic Church had about 300,000 Japanese converts and followers. (24) However, after Hideyoshi’s order to end all christian influence, the Japanese converts quickly began to disappear.
The Harlem Intelligentsia is about McKay time in America as the Assistant editor of The Liberator and meeting NAACP’s members. How this came about is when his boss, Hubert Harrison, wanted more black activities in the Negro radical movement. Eager for such an opportunity, McKay gather many well know Negro activists of artists and non-artists to expand Garvey’s United Negro Improvement Association. The cultural impact of the Harlem Renaissance was paramount in creating a collective shift of consciousness in America. This shift was the byproduct of the Great Migration forcing a environment for art, philosophy and religion to proliferate. Furthermore, these driving factors provided an abundance of exposure of African American culture to the rest of America particularly white America. Moreover, this environment was teeming with creativity producing great music, poetry and actors. In addition, the environment also was intellectually driven from philosophers, writers and bloomed progressive sects of religion.
The 1920’s The decade of the 1920’s is best described as “Boom to Bust.” In the beginning people were having a very good time, not just at parties but economically and culturally. Even though the 18th amendment was passed in 1919, making the sale of alcohol illegal, people still drank, mostly in secret. There were tons of inventions that really got people moving and spending such as electricity/lights, the automobile, credit, and the modern radio. Everyone in the 1920’s was feeling good, making a lot of money, and buying whatever they wanted, but all of the ended with the crash of the stock market.
Instead, he implores them to be more political. His goal in writing is to make people aware of the social injustices occurring. The Harlem Renaissance is a term that encompasses an intellectual and literary movement of the 1920s and 1930s. A renowned scholar, Alain Locke, argued that “Negro life is seizing its first chances for group expression and self determination” (1926). Moreover, The Harlem Renaissance refers to the re-birth of African Americans who needed “an affirmation of their dignity and humanity in the face of poverty and racism” (Gates, 1997: 929). In their research, Shukla and Banerji state the the Harlem Renaissance “can be considered as the spring of Afro-American voice” that previously remained unheard and unnoticed (2012). For the first time black musicians and artists came to the fore of attention and started to be praised for their work.
Years before we started our constitution with “we the people…;” years before we distinguished society to be separated into colors -- black, white or somewhere in between; years before we pledged together to be “...one nation under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all…,” we lived under the British rule. However, with the sacrifices of many men who made history come to life, we gained our freedom. Soon our America turned into my America -- my as in the “white” America. The cultural movement known as the Harlem Renaissance approached later on in the early twentieth century, where vibrancies of new perceptions emerged in the minds of many African Americans. However, this white America proved to be an obstacle, taking away the freedom and excitement that the African Americans felt after years of oppression.
My next and final topic that I chose is The Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was rooted in the struggle for black civil rights. During and about right after WWI, in a phase of the Great Migration, some half a million African Americans moved from the rural South to the cities of the North. Most people moved in hopes of escaping the poverty and the oppression of Jim Crow Laws. They encountered racist hostility nearly as bitter as they experienced in the South.
The Harlem Renaissance was the peak of creativity for African Americans in art, music, and literature. African Americans were discovering self-love and how amazing the Negro actually was. The “New Negro” refused the commonly perceived slave image that many blacks were still viewed as. In Zora Neale Hurston’s essay, "How It Feels to Be Colored Me." , she also explains her life and what is was like to be her in the time during the Harlem Renaissance.
The Roaring Twenties were characterized by large growth economically and culturally in the United States. One example of the cultural growth that occurred was in Harlem, and it was called the Harlem Renaissance. Like the previous Renaissances of other countries, the Harlem Renaissance displayed a great growth in the arts. The Harlem Renaissance was not only an advancement of African American culture and art, but culture and art of the United States. One person that supported the advancements of the arts was Alain Locke.

As a part of the Harlem Renaissance culture, it was noted that in the late 1800s and early 1900s, many southern blacks fled to escape persecution and to find opportunities in northern industrial centers. Blacks wanted to come to the North with hopes that they would find improved working and living conditions compared to the opportunities available in the post war Southern region. As stated in the packet, Harlem came to symbolize a new age of sophistication and urbanity for the blacks in America. The Harlem Renaissance was a movement that reflected the culture of African Americans in an artistic way during the 1920’s and the 30’s. Many African Americans who participated in this movement showed a different side of the “Negro Life,” and rejected the stereotypes that were forced on themselves. The Harlem Renaissance was full of artists, musicians, and writers who wrote about their thoughts, especially on discrimination towards blacks, such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Langston Hughes. The Harlem Renaissance was an influential and exciting movement, and influenced others to fight for what they want and believed in. The Harlem Renaissance was the start of the Civil Rights Movement.
I disagree with the schools that would only sell healthy drinks such as milk, water, and fruit juice. First of all, some students might be allergic to milk and some fruit juice. Another reason is any students should be able to bring any type of drink they please because some students might have their own opinion of what they like to drink with their meal at school. Also, I know that students should be more careful what they drink but the students would just go home and consume more sugary drinks when they have a chance . Also, students can still be healthy when they drink unhealthy drinks because they can have one type of sugary drink a day and the rest water or they can exercise after they drink a sugary drink with their meal also, some of the healthy drinks are not really healthy at all.
In this novel the reader can see the inner turmoil within literature and its characters. There is a major shift present from supernatural and religious happiness, into individual driven happiness. Due to this newly valued individual independence, social boundaries in race and gender started to appear, thus causing the transition into the Harlem Renaissance, a movement that celebrated African American culture through artwork, literature, and music. Throughout this era elements of new identity, political challenging, and gender and racial improvements were all addressed and examined in the associated literature. The poem Legal Alien is a good example of the ideals encompassed in the era.
