Harriet Tubman was a abolitionist, an integral part of the Underground Railroad, a humanitarian who is a man or woman who does good for the world, abolitionist which is a person who is against slavery, a Union Nurse, and a spy during the American Civil War.

Tubman was born in 1819 or 1820. When she was born her name was Araminta Ross but she changed it to Harriet Ross around the time of her marriage to honor her mother. Tubman was born in Dorchester County, Maryland to Harriet Bit Ross and Benjamin Ross. She was one of nine children born to Harriet and Benjamin Ross. Her childhood nickname was Minty. She married him in 1844 they had no children. She decided to escape slavery in 1849.When she told her husband the news he said “If you leave I will tell your owner and never forgive you”. She chose to go anyway because she didn’t care what he said. Two of her brothers went with her their names were Henry and Ben Ross. A couple of hours after they left the brothers thought that this was a bad idea. So they told Tubman that they were going to go back. She chose to take her brothers back home instead of letting them go alone. A few days later she went by herself. Harriet went to a white woman's house who had offered to help her earlier. She went from house to house until she finally came to Philadelphia. Minty traveled to Florida, Canada, New York, Washington during her lifetime. She is famous for being a conductor for the Underground Railroad. An interesting fact about Harriet Tubman is that she helped on a military campaign that led to the rescue of seven hundred fifty slaves. First she went back to Maryland to get her family through the Underground Railroad then she went back to get her childhood freinds and most of the other slaves. More than half of the seven hundred fifty slaves Tubman rescued where her friends and family. In Philadelphia she worked at a restaurant.
