Fredrick Douglas was born in Talbot county, Maryland. He lived from 1818 until February 20th, 1895. He was a slave abolitionist, a writer, orator and a salesman. Fredrick Escaped slavery in Maryland and became an orator, to bring word throughout the United Stated that slaves did with hold the power to be intelligent beings such as the white man but were never allowed education. He was the perfect counter example for slave holders that slaves do possess knowledge.
Why did Fredrick Douglas despise slavery? Fredrick Douglas, an African American that has an abundance of history with slavery and torment. Without reading this I wouldn’t have learned how cruel slavery actually was, and how enslavers stole people from their homes, and how he wished to be an animal. The Immorality of slavery is gruesome to many eyes. Though, people still want to rule over other people for various arrogant reasons.
Fredrick Douglas and William Garrison were a part of the abolitionist movement because they fought for the slave to be free and to have independence. Fredrick Douglas wrote three autobiographies about his life and slavery in America. Fredrick Douglas was a runaway slave his self and he sought that he should help other slaves’ runaway as well. A literate slave, Douglas started his speaking career in 1841, when he delivered some extemporaneous remarks on his experience as a slave at an Massachusetts antislavery convention (Shmoop Fredrick).
Douglass for example emphasized the importance of education for slaves. Douglass is a first had observer of the strategy of slave owners to keep their slaves ignorant. By keeping slave uneducated they are unable to express the horrible things that happen to them to the world. Hugh Auld forces his wife to stop teaching Douglass to read (auld stopping teaching quote) , so Douglass teaches himself. For him learning to read was a major turning point in his quest for freedom and it enabled him to put out his book, which would inspire many to turn against slavery.
He began to hear about the anti-slavery movement and learned to read and write. Unfortunately, he was sent to work on a farm that was run by a notoriously brutal slave owner. The mistreatment he suffered was immense.

Finally, he successfully escaped to New York and secured his freedom. His experience was reasonable to know and understand different perspective from other former slaves. His contributions as an abolitionist to fight for an equality on behalf of African Americans and women's right inspired other's to fight for their freedom.
Slavery has been a grave mistake that has dented our history and has been remembered ever since. Some people have demonstrated acts of leadership and heroism to get slavery to an end. Never did they give up because they have not succeeded but they still gave it their all. Some have given more than others, but all contribute that will get them to end of the goal. People like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass have truly demonstrated of being a person, or abolitionist, that possesses traits like leadership, heroism and dedication.
Douglass states: “The more I read, the more I was led to abhor and detest my enslavers. I could regard them in no other light than a band of successful robbers, who had left their homes, and gone to Africa, and stolen us from our homes, and in a strange land reduced us to slavery” (Douglass 51). Reading and writing opened Frederick Douglass’s eyes to the cause of the abolitionist. He became knowledgeable about a topic that white slave owners tried to keep hidden from their slaves. Literacy would eventually impact his life in more ways than what he could see while he was a young slave under Master Hugh’s
He became known as an inspirational person. Not many people are willing to go against what others believe, but Douglass was. His slave owner thought that it was “unlawful, as well as unsafe, to teach a slave to read” (Douglass 29), but that did not stop him from pursuing further knowledge. Education has a powerful effect that makes others fear that one has superiority over them one way or another. Slaves had their basic human rights taken away from them because slave owners wanted them to lack the ability to form an opinion on what was happening to them.
