In my English class I read the book called Monster written by Walter Dean Myers. It was about a young man called Steve Harmon who was arrested for allegedly being a part of a crime gone horribly wrong, which sadly resulted in a man losing his life. It also spoke about what Steve had to endure throughout that entire process of that trail. In the end even tho Steve knew that the crime will occur he still was found not guilty. I believe that Steve Harmon should have been found not guilty because, he did not give a signal and he also did not receive any part of the money that taken from the robbery.
Do you get along better with a certain parent more than you do with the other. For example, maybe you get along with your mother more than you get along with your father because she is more understanding. In the book Monster by Walter Dean Myers the main character is named Steve Harmon. He is in court because he is being accused of being involved in the murder of a drugstore owner, Mr. Nesbitt. Steve’s parents each visit Steve at different times, and both have different views on whether he is guilty or innocent.
People have said, no one before or since had so completely defined the art of escape as him (“Harry Houdini”). In 1893 he married fellow performer Wilhelmina Beatrice Rahner and would be his lifelong stage partner (Harry Houdini Biography). Harry Houdini was always upping up his act from handcuffs and straitjackets to locked, water-filled tanks, and nailed packing crates. He was only able to escape because of his strength and his ability to pick locks (Harry Houdini Biography).
H.H. Holmes was a man who was known in The United States of America because of his murderous tendencies. He was a serial killer, the first ever in the United States of America. In the 1860’s, when H.H. Holmes was born, The United States of America had elected Abraham Lincoln to be the next president and South Carolina secedes from the Union. The Civil War is about to start, which means there is strain in Congress whether or not slavery is good or bad.
Works of literature often provide readers with important insight on compelling thematic topics, such as perseverance, friendship and power. This is evident in the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Taking place in the midst of world war two, the book is filled with circumstances where the characters face real world conflicts and problems. The novel starts off with Liesel Meminger being taken to a foster home in the small town of Molching, German; where along the way her little brother has died due to health complications. She begins to bond with her foster father, Hans Hubermann, over the book she has brought with her.
Memories and Grieving Impacting Ethical and Moral Decisions In J.K Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Mark Zusak’s novel The Book Thief, memories act as an important basis for the actions and choices of characters. Memories of influential people in character’s lives often act as a basis point for his or her ethical or moral beliefs. Thus, when acting or making choices, memories of loved ones and the grief associated with loss are significant in character’s choices.
Gilman also highlights a lack of identity of the narrator through the setting of the novella which reflects the narrator’s societal confinement. The protagonist is surrounded by “hedges and walls and gates that lock”, which create a sense of separation that the narrator feels from others and the outside world. In addition, the room in which she is confined contains a “heavy bedstead, and… barred windows, and then that gate at the head of the stairs, and so on”. These physical and ‘prison-like’ restrictions imposed on the protagonist clearly demonstrate her lack of freedom. Additionally, Gilman’s use of syndetic listing to describe the narrator’s physical entrapment is perhaps reflective of her feelings of suffocation and her inability to escape as the list feels never ending.
"They were just a bunch of worthless little queers and punks." (John Wayne Gacy, 1978) “I’ve had photos of 21 of the victims and I’ve looked at them all over the years here and I’ve never recognized anyone of them." (John Wayne Gacy, year unknown) He called a random person and persuaded them to drink alcohol. After they have been close, he always used a “trick” which he said that he is going to do a magic show.
Books have always been an alternate world to escape to and learn more about the world around you. But that’s a privilege some do not have. In Fahrenheit 451, books and burned at all costs and in The Book Thief, Liesel must steal to be able to read and learn about the world. Within both texts, books play a vital role.

A natural human instinct is to do anything in order to survive. Though a person may not necessarily want to survive, the physical body of a person does. The body naturally will try to do anything in order to protect itself and survive even when the person does not notice. Survival comes at a cost that not all people are willing to pay. To survive there are struggles and obstacles that not all are willing to face, but to get through these obstacles an individual is one step closer to survival.
Imagine a kid having their father leave them, their mother dying when they are three years old, having a speech problem, and being a highschool dropout at the age of seventeen. Who would ever come over all of this to become successful in the real world? Walter Dean Myers would to shape himself into someone for African-American children to look up to, to show there is a way out. Writing more than one hundred books about African-Americans and Juveniles helped him be shown as an author that speaks out on equality for African Americans. His own life impacted what he wrote about and his message is there is a way out for young African-Americans.
The knocking stopped suddenly although it’s echos were still in the house. “I’m sorry” The words resounded through the room, giving off an eerie atmosphere. Mrs.White slowly turned around, a mix of both fear and desperation in her eyes. “You didn’t” she whispered, as tears threatened to fall.
The characters in a story. They are hard to bring to life, yet a story would be incomplete without them. I love to write, and I often don’t have troubles creating my characters. But what makes every character stand out is that special thing about each and every one of them. That’s one thing that I loved about “The Book Thief,” by Markus Zusak.
The Book Thief, directed by Brian Percival, is a film adaptation of a book by Mark Zusak centred around adolescent girl Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nelisse). Set in Germany during the early-mid 1940’s, leading up to the war, Liesel is sent away from her family to live with foster parents since she is at risk of being killed due as her parents are communists. Percival uses skilfully chosen aural and visual elements as well as cinematic techniques such as lighting and camera angles to communicate and explore the central theme to the audience: the power of human spirit, especially when dealing with adversity. Percival designs the aural elements in the scenes that make up the film The Book Thief to communicate and allow the audience to explore the power of the human spirit when dealing with adversity. Percival does this by using the aforementioned techniques to create juxtapositions, contrasting the power of the human spirit against adversity.
