In the article “The Magic of Leadership: An Exploration of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” Manda Rosser explains the role of leadership in the fourth movie of the Harry Potter series. Rosser argues that leadership is a quality that can be taught and learned, and that the situations in Harry Potter capture moments that provide insight into power and leadership. Specifically, in the bases of social power, situational leadership, and transformation and transactional leadership. Social power can also be described as influence, and it does not only come from a person but also a position or group. Situational leadership focuses on when individuals step up in situation to assume a leadership position whereas transformation leadership is when a follower is transformed into a leader. For some reason, I had not considered leadership until reading this article, but it makes sense. There are many instances here where Harry takes on a leadership role, whether it is by choice or not, and these examples definitely could help readers learn the necessary qualities, and actions, of a leader. I also had not considered Voldemort a leader before, but I see how it can show that there are positive and negative leaders.
I thought the use of tables in the article helped clearly explained how each situation correlated to a lesson in power or leadership. I think it strengthened Rosser’s argument, but I do believe that the tables could have been placed better throughout the text. Although, that could be a result of the form in which we were able to view the
