Harry S. Truman was born on May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri. Before he got into politics, he was a farmer and businessman in his hometown and married Elizabeth “Bess” Virginia Wallace in 1919. He was born with poor vision and required glasses, which made him stick out from his peers, he had to work hard to make friends. He graduated from high school in 1901 and attended a business college in Kansas City. By 1906, he has dropped out of college and quit his job to work at his family farm to help his family out. He did join the National Guard for a while during World War I. This was said to have helped his masculinity improve and he became a strong, independent, hard working young man.
He made his way into politics by being elected as one of the three judges in the Jackson County court. By 1930, Truman was elected as part of the Senate in the United States. He was re-elected in 1940, and he became part of what would soon be called the Truman Committee. It didn't take him long to run for vice president with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During his presidency that he was not ready for, he made lots of big decisions and faced very difficult challenges. That's why Truman called his very first year of presidency the “year of decisions”. He had to make a decision on what to do about the war against Germany and Japan, he had to deal with the atomic bomb that he had no idea was being built, he needed to help rebuild postwar Europe, deal with communism and get ready for the Korean
