Even though Henrietta’s life was not always easy, everyone in her life, including close friends and family learn to push through the struggles present in each situation until the end of a battle, which is shown in, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. “ The next morning [Henrietta] climbed from the Buick outside Hopkins again, telling Day and the children not to worry” ( Skloot 31). As Henrietta was in the stage of discovering the early stages of cancer, her family had to endure the mental pain of their mother, which shows that even though their mother is not healthy the children still have to think positive to get through these tough times.
Have you ever wondered how an older brother feels about the younger one? For example, in Tangerine, a novel by Edward Bloor, the main character Paul, had feared his older brother, Erik, for his entire life. In the book, Erik is described as a selfish character that didn’t care for Paul in the very least. Just the opposite, Erik often likes to make choices that would make Paul feel bad. Erik’s choices have caused Paul to be blind, made him think himself as a coward, and weakened the friendships between Paul and Joey.
Then depression hit my mother hard because of the constant alienation from her family and friends. My mother finally stopped working, When my mom stopped working compares to the part of the story when Henry finally heads home from
In the novel Ha has moved to Alabama and is being turned inside out. Ha is being turned inside out by starting to go to school, not knowing who to be around or how to eat the food, and being bullied by another student. Ha talks to her mother about school and what she is going to do. Ha also asks her what it will be like and what there. In the poem, “The Outside”, it says, “What friends?
On page 107 it says, “My mother looks at me, it is that look of final resignation I see in her eyes, that look that says she is ready for whatever awaits her beyond the door however sad or horrible.” That takes a lot of spirit to have a brave face in times of despair and be ready for anything and everything. Even though Edward left her for weeks at a time for buisness, and Sandra had to act like a single mom for William, she still loved him. She has the power to look over all of his flaws and imperfections and act like everything was normal when he was there. Nobody ever looks further than skin deep when seeing someone for the first time.
Also, because she “whispered”, it adds emphasis to the quote by adding a sense of defeat and vulnerability in her tone. It is shown that Lily wants to know the reason why her mother abandoned her unveiling the amount of emotion caused by her mother’s abandonment. These examples of tone help the reader have a
“..I wish I knew enough English to tell her to listen for the diacritical mark.” (Lai, 140) Ha is inside out because she is in a new country with a new language and she doesn’t know how to speak it. “No, they’re not curious.” (Lai, 146) Ha is inside out because people are bullying her and she doesn’t have anyone to help her. She is bullied because she looks different.
Our main character Ha is feeling inside out because she feels anxious, confused, and is getting bullied. All of these feelings are present because of Ha’s new school in Alabama. While Ha is getting ready, she gets incredibly anxious. Not knowing what to expect, what will happen, and most importantly, if the kids will accept her are the biggest reason why Ha feels inside out. Together with being apprehensive, on page 139, Ha states that she has “dragonflies zipping through my gut.”
Out of the three sons, Hakeem Lyon represents the underdeveloped son who was favorited by his father for being the youngest, but missed the guidance, and love from Cookie. Hakeem fights against his three brothers for his father’s affection but due to his young age and lack of experience, he struggles to receive it. Now that his mother is back in the picture, he relies heavily on her for support, and for encouragement he didn’t receive as a child from his father or mother. His character identifies with young men who are attempting to find their permanent place in the world but base their decision based on other’s opinions. Before Cookie came into Hakeem’s life, he found a maternal figure by having relationships with older women, and that is
As Ha spends more time in Alabama, she is regains her confidence back, “I go to the board, chalk the answer in five moves,”(Lai 187). When Ha’s bully and classmates were having a hard time with a math problem, Ha goes to the chalkboard and gets it done in five moves. Ha is finally gaining her confidence back to face the bullying that is being thrown at her. Then, Ha is developing relationships with her teacher and peers, “I don’t believe her but it feels good that someone knows,” (Lai 182). Ha is now starting to develop a relationship with her teacher.
When Ha and her family are finally in their new country her brother picks her up from school on a bike and their hands touch and it brings her back again. “ I sit side saddle on the handle bars, edges of our hands touching” (Lai 154). In the beginning of the literature I noticed all of Maggie’s family members were very hostile except her. Maggie was the only calm one of the family. As the story progressed I noticed the death of both Maggie and the father had one thing in common, the mother
Once she finds out the there is no cancer, the reader understands the instant relief she feels (Salcman and Collier, 2015). In “The Ship Pounding,” the perspective is from a family member/caregiver to Jane and speaks about the harsh reality of caring for a loved one (Levine, 2014). The reality of treatment, multiple caregivers at the hospital, leaving the hospital, and having to do it all over again is related to ship working overtime in one location, but never getting to reach a destination or travel (Levine, 2014). In the poem, “The Sick Wife,” it speaks about how difficult it is for a person lose strength and see everyone around you partaking in everyday activities the person use to do, especially for this young person in the poem (Levine, 2014). Great expectations is one of the best books that I have read and today in this essay we will be analysing a character and describing her traits, and this character is miss havisham that is in great expectations, I am going to talk in depth about the traits and the strengths that miss havisham has and the weaknesses. Miss Havisham is an important character in the book. Without her, Pip never would have been able to get his apprenticeship, he never would have met Estella, and he never would have wanted to become a gentleman in the first place, because he wouldn’t see anything wrong with himself. Miss Havisham feels only hate towards men, and she wanted them all to suffer the way she suffered on her wedding day; the day she has never recovered from. On her wedding day, her fiancé never showed up, leaving her with just a letter.
