Self assessment is a concept familiar to me however one that I am not very comfortable with for it further clarifies my realization that I have so much to learn in every aspect of my life. It does keep me grounded and able to learn from anything and everything on a daily basis. I work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and as a Neonatologist I am the team leader in a multitude of situations which require quick, precise and accurate decision making skills on a daily basis. These decisions are not always huge life altering moments but those that can have an impact on a baby and a family. I also now understand that there are areas that I am strong in and there are other areas I need work in to make better. My strength are my ability and drive to make an effort to do what is right and to uphold the edicts of the American Academy of Pediatrics. I am also someone who is a good team player and have the ability to understand and recognize diversity in cultures and beliefs. However I also realized that whilst I was clear on my aim during patient care, my ability to bring up and resolve controversial issues was not good. My ability to impart negative news to my colleagues is not well developed either as I am not exposed to these situations. The self assessment tool also made me realize that there were a ton of situations which I had not been exposed to and thus my ability to be able to fathom my answers in those situations was impaired. This lead me to the need to develop a general set of parameters that resonate with me and to use these parameters to answer ethical questions that may arise in the future. I learned how important it is to keep code of ethics in mind when dealing or answering questions concerning ethical decisions. Next is determining the ethical outlook that is relevant to the specific conflict, determining the actions and response to break the issue down, evaluations of the decision, and share and implement the decision.
