Health Course Reflection

The aspect that interests me the most during this course is the health status and health care in other countries. I have personally not traveled outside of the United States; I find it interesting to learn about health care services and health status in other countries. Most people complain about how bad our health care is here in the United States, compared to some of the health care service in other countries, especially in low-income countries, the health care we have here is great. I enjoyed learning about the health of people that reside in other countries than the United States and I enjoyed learning about the health care service in other countries. I did not have a great understanding of other culture’s beliefs and practices prior to this course. Improving my knowledge of other cultures allows me as a nurse to provide my patients with the care that he or she needs while implementing culturally competent care. The most useful thing that I learned in this course is how critical malnutrition is in children especially the children in low-income countries. Malnutrition has an effect on about eighteen million children each year; most of these children with malnutrition reside in low-income countries (Giovanni et al., 2016, p. 2436). This is something that needs to change; there is no reason to have so many children suffering from malnutrition. After learning about how severe malnutrition can be for children, I am more interested in finding out ways that I as a nurse can help to decrease the number of cases of malnutrition in children. I believe all that I have learned during this course on global health will improve the care that I am giving to my patients.
