Community Course Reflection

There are many things that I have learned from my community course and placement that has changed my thinking about schools and communities. Ghuman (2009) states “I have found that there is no better way to connect with and truly understand the diverse experiences and talents of students and their families than to be a visible member in the community where I am teaching” (p.1). This quote demonstrates the importance of being an active participant in the community you teach. This quote is something that I have literally taken away from this course. Students families and community partners impact the school, which is why it is important to be culturally sensitive and aware of the community the students are coming from. As James (2012) argues “of course, students’ lives are first and foremost shape by their parents and family members, but in the absence of information about families, a reasonable starting point to knowledge the students is getting to know the community” (p.127) …show more content…

In other words, I learned from the change orientation that it is important to put yourself in someone else is shoes. From my community placement and my school placement I learned the language of the students. For instance, being a part of the Jane and Finch community I have become a lot more sensitive to judgements and assumptions. I know how important it is to avoid this. Being a part of this community centre made me aware of where the students are coming
