Beauty Can Be Deceiving There are beautiful women all over the world, but not all are so beautiful in their heart as they are physically. Often men’s first impression on a women is their beauty but they should consider the lady’s personality because judging a woman by her beauty is dangerous. The mythological reasoning behind the story of Helen backs up the reasoning that all women are not beautiful inside and out. Helen is known as the most beautiful woman in the world, but takes advantage of this privilege, which eventually gets taken to the next level and gets out of hand. In the painting Helen’s beauty is illustrated as she is standing in the peaceful atmosphere with nature surrounding her. In the poem the man in love with her mentions multiple times how beautiful and important she is by longing for her love. Another theme that connects the two is humanity relying on others. In the poem Helen’s lover relies on Helen to make him happy again and to feel free, he relies on Helen’s beauty for his happiness. In the painting Helen is holding a mirror to her face admiring her own beauty, Helen’s beauty is what made her so successful and known so she is relying on her beauty so she can continue to manipulate men. Overall, the major theme that both the painting and the poem share is the story of the Trojan War. Helen was married to Menelaus but a man named Paris got his choice of the most beautiful woman and he took Helen off to Troy with him. The Trojan war was a war between the two men fighting over Helen and to whom gets the pleasure to win her over and take her home. The Greek warriors assembled 1,000 ships and sailed to Troy, the war was indecisive the first nine years but in the tenth year the two men agreed on the warriors fighting in a single combat with Helen as the judge (History of Helen and the Trojan War). Eventually Menelaus won the war and lived happily with Helen but this ties to the poem because in the beginning it all begins with “Was this the face that launch'd a thousand ships, And burnt the the topless towers of Ilium?” The whole poem focuses on the power Helen has to compel the men, the speaker was begging for her love and there was a war over her, women can be dangerous.
