Hematomas are a disorder of the body and can happen easily in the body after certain events. A hematoma is blood swelling and clotting inside of the tissues. What happens when a person develops a hematoma is that the wall of the blood vessel has been injured causing blood to seep out and clot. It can sometimes be easily seen, like under the nail, and other times it is internal, like in the organs, and can’t be seen. There are many different types of hematomas that can be seen in people. Hematomas can be caused in many different ways. For certain hematomas to be diagnosed they must perform special test like, a blood count or liver test to see what is going on in the inside of a person’s body. Sometimes they are diagnosed with imaging studies like, a computerized tomography or an magnetic resonance imaging also known as MRI. These are the few methods to diagnose a hematoma. However the treatment for a hematoma is very simple. If the hematoma is not a major one it can easily be treated at home by resting, icing it, compressing the area, and elevating the area where the hematoma is. For more major hematomas you can take pain relief medicine like, Advil or Tylenol. If the hematoma has been diagnosed as a very major one you can get surgical drainage. There is not one single cure for hematomas but you can lessen the pain through these steps. The prognosis of a hematoma begins when the blood vessel is ruptured and blood begins to clot. Usually the hematoma will fix itself after a certain time but some may need to be looked at by doctors, especially ones that are located in the head. Hematomas cannot really be prevented. The most that can be done to prevent one is being careful when walking and doing certain activities so that you do not fall.
