Hercules Accomplishments

The culture of ancient Greece was defined by mythology and contributions to the world. Greek mythology played an important role in the everyday life in ancient Greece, teaching people meaningful lessons and values, and setting beliefs in the stories of Greek gods, goddesses, and heroes. In Greek mythology, Hercules is a demigod with superhuman strength, and he is the son of the Greek god Zeus. When he was born, Hera, the Greek goddess, attempts to kill Hercules and fails. After the failure to kill Hercules, once he is older, Hera casts a spell on Hercules, making him kill his wife and children. After the death of his family, Hercules feels guilt-ridden, so he goes to Apollo to be punished and eventually completes the 12 Impossible Tasks. Through

Consistently, throughout his life, Hercules has proven his mental strength, will, honor, and determination. The 12 Impossible Tasks and other accomplishments of Hercules have played major historical roles in modern society. Herculean tasks, being “something that is of unusual size, power, or difficulty”, have in themselves set standards for how men should behave, with men trying to accomplish great things without guarantee of success, showing determination and courage (Anthony Hollingsworth). Throughout history, the events in the life of Hercules and his determination have proven their relevance in the effect of people now. Furthermore, Hercules was a hero who helped people who were unable to help themselves, inspiring modern-day heroes and superheroes. Traits of Hercules such as courage, bravery, and the desire for justice have developed into sources of inspiration for heroic characters, with Hercules being “often cited as an inspiration for characters like Superman” (Hardik Dhamija). With his desire to do the morally right thing and demonstration of grit, Hercules has become the source of inspiration for numerous characters and people throughout history. In modern times, it is expected that men act strong and ambitious, playing a dominant or powerful role in society. Traditionally, it is typical for men to do more physical jobs and act as a provider, with the influence of other people “based on the different expectations that individuals, groups, and societies have of individuals”(Amy Blackstone). This goes to show the similarities of characteristics of Hercules and the standards set for men, furthermore developing the idea that ambition, strength, and success are valued in modern society.
