Two Societies, Two Mindsets How has society shaped one’s mind to view their lives? In Disney’s Hercules and the Greek Myth “Heraclês,” there are many cultural differences based on how the two societies view different events, such as family values, comedic relief, and heroic acts. One example of a cultural value difference between Hercules and “Heraclês” is the family values. In the myth, things are typically on the straightforward, serious side. For example, in the myth, Zeus has many wives, and he was never with just one woman. However, in Hercules, Zeus is seen with just one wife, Hera. Hera is also not the mother of Heraclês in the myth. Disney probably did this in order to show a healthy family dynamic. Another difference of family values is that in Hercules, Zeus only had one son. There are some parts in the myths where it may seem funny to a reader, but there does not seem to be anything that is necessarily intentional. One method was using humorous characters, such as Pegasus, Pain, Panic, and Phil. These characters did funny acts or said a comment to provide a little relief in the heavy moments of Hercules. Another example of comedy relief are Hades’ helpers, Pain and Panic. When Hades is in his anger zone, they are there to lighten the mood. For example, when Hades is upset about Hercules overcoming every task that is thrown at him, Pain and Panic were holding Hercule’s merchandise. Lastly, an example of the comedy relief in Disney’s Hercules is Hades’ temper. Every time that Hades’ was upset, it was put in a comedic way, such as having flames come out of his head. Overall, because Disney movies are for children, it makes sense that they tried to put in more comedy than the original
