History had to start somewhere and that one of the earliest record keepers where Herodotus and Sima Qian. Herodotus recording the history of the Greece while Sima Qian recording China’s early history. Thought these men were not the most accurate and unbiased record-keeper, it does shine a light into the mindsets of the people of the time. In these two own way, the do display the events of their time with their own unique view on the their surroundings. These two only have one thing in common, their almost outrageous views on the world around them. Herodotus’s mannerism may be inspired by the legends surrounding Greek myths. Beforehand, the Greeks had deep connections to their god’s and mythos. Before, most of their tales and stories were poems spoken by mouth as illustrated here: “ These long poems were originally preserved as oral, not written, literature” (p.5)
The Greek was a creative culture that loves storytelling, one of the reasons why these poems were not written down in the first place may have been because they loved telling these stories so much. It was not until some time has passed that Greek historian realized they should tell their stories without their myths or even write within chronological order. Then one of the most well known Greek historian, Hecataeus, started to not only record in a chronological order but also travel to write down the history surrounding Greece as well as displayed here: “ In this work, Hecataeus tried to cover as much of the world as possible.” So this must of inspired Herodotus to do the same.
