In the chapter XXIII of the New Testament, King Herod Antipas was forced to keep John the Baptist, a faithful man, in his prison for Queen Herodias against his releasing due to John’s objection to her marriage with the King. When the young daughter of Queen Herodias, the princess, was permitted an oath by the King through the way of pleasing him. When she turned to her mother to inquire what shall she asked, the mother said without sympathy and forgiveness: “The head of John the Baptist.” The King Herod was not willing but to obey the promise made by himself, and due to the reason of killing a faithful prophet, the King himself at the end was sent out of his own country, and what’s more, all the riches and honors he possessed were taken by the Lord.
In Herodotus’ Histories, Tigranes teasingly says, “Zounds, Mardonios, what manner of men are these that you have brought us to fight withal? ‘Tis not for money they contend but for glory of achievement!’. Tigranes makes this offhand comment, but it implies a difference between Spartan and Persian culture. Xerxes understands the implications of the comment itself and reacts badly to it. During battle, Xerxes finds out that the Spartans’ difference in values makes the Spartans better warriors.

Primary Source Analysis: The History of Herodotus; Book I: Clio The Histories, by Herodotus, is a detailed account of the aggression and later violence between the Greeks and Persians, and was the first ever written record of a historical event. It was due to its name and example that history has even been continuously recorded, and how Herodotus earned his nickname “The Father of History”. Because of it was separated into nine books, each named after one of the nine Muses, the focus of this analysis will be of Book I, Clio, which tells the beginning of the transgressions between the Greeks and the Persians.
Odysseus Essay: Odysseus of Ithaka. Some historians have argued for years that he is a noble hero, and others say he is just a man trying to get home from many hardship and challenges, however Odysseus is the definition of a hero. During Odysseus’s journey it becomes evident that Odysseus is a hero like the legends say, he meets all the criterias of being a hero such as being brave, smart, fighting against evil, and protecting others from danger. For generations people have been correct to honor the great Odysseus, for his actions along his adventures. Although there has been some evidence that points to Odysseus not being a hero, this essay will give three reasons why Odysseus should be respected as a hero.
Everyone has their own definition of a hero. Many people think of superheroes who fight for the good of humanity. Others think of great warriors in ancient Greece and Rome. While it's nice to know what heroes might look like, it's more important to understand what makes someone a hero. Odysseus is one of these important heroes whose actions should be explained.
Heroes are, “People who take risks despite fear”(Source 2). In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus faces many challenges that make him a hero. He battles monsters, goddesses, and enchantresses. Odysseus is a hero in the way that he uses his brain to think about and approach dilemmas. When he and his men are on the Cyclops’ island, Odysseus tells the cyclops that his name was Nobody.
Herodotus defines the differences between the Greeks and Persians in his writings. One of the major differences between Greece and Persia is their governments. Herodotus identifies two main forms of government: a democracy such as Athens, and a monarchy such as Persia. Which form of governing is better? In a democracy, all men are hypothetically equal and there is no single ruler who is above the population.
From the beginning Oedipus was destined to fulfill a terrible prophecy, but through particular events that follow the steps of the Hero’s Journey, Oedipus becomes a powerful king of Thebes, only to be destroyed by the prophecy that should have ended his life as a child. The Hero’s Journey typically leads to self-confidence and power, however; the Hero’s Journey of Oedipus leads to his tragic demise. The Hero’s Journey lays out the steps of Oedipus’s future actions, which create suspense, fear, pity, and other emotions that captivates the audience. Similar to many famous stories, Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles in 430 B.C., follows the Hero’s Journey path, which is evident in Oedipus’s departure, initiation, and return.
iv) Herodotus’s writing is useful when studying ancient Egypt as it shows and explains all views of both scholars and foreigners at the time (Hdt. 2.20). The text teaches historians about Egypt’s neighbours and their views on Egyptian culture and the Nile (Hdt. 2.30). This source is also useful in teaching historians about climate and the geography of ancient Egypt (Hdt. 2.25). These writings are bought directly from Herodotus to historians showing us what history books were like during the time of ancient Egypt.
The odyssey, an epic told by Homer in ancient greece, has many major themes following odysseus’s adventures. While Odysseus is sentenced to never return home after the Trojan War. He is overcoming challenges to return home to his wife penelope and his son Telemachus. Throughout the story major themes of loyalty, hospitality and vengeance are hidden within the plot. The story continues to show his heroic side with three major traits.
Epictetus I really feel that quote is deep I will explain on that topic later on in the paper. He was really ahead of his time. I chose Epictetus because he stated facts in my opinion, also he was a slave, and he stands on what he believes. I feel like as a result of his stoic philosophy teaching that his thoughts live on even in today era. Let me elaborate with the slave accusations.
In ancient times of the Greeks and Chinese were two influential historians. Their names are known around the world today. Their names are Herodotus and Sima Qian. Sima Qian was a historian from ancient China while Herodotus was from Greece. We all play a part in life and these two were no exception.
The modern historian faces many problems when relying on Herodotos’ Histories as a documentation of colonisation in the Archaic Greek Period. Herodotos’ accounts of the origins of a polis usually have some mythical interpretation; it is this focus on the blending of supernatural and geo-political elements that makes The Histories such a valuable source of anthropological insight. The term colonisation is a dubious one; it calls to mind a population simply moving from place to place, yet the Greeks distinguished between places that were trading posts, emporia, and ‘homes-away-from-home’, apoikiai. The fact that this distinction is not readily apparent in a modern context of colonisation means that we often see historians in the early 20th century
History had to start somewhere and that one of the earliest record keepers where Herodotus and Sima Qian. Herodotus recording the history of the Greece while Sima Qian recording China’s early history. Thought these men were not the most accurate and unbiased record-keeper, it does shine a light into the mindsets of the people of the time. In these two own way, the do display the events of their time with their own unique view on the their surroundings. These two only have one thing in common, their almost outrageous views on the world around them.
