The effectiveness of a leader lives and dies on the decisions that leader makes. It is a leader's job not only to make decisions that will be successful but to make decisions in a way that will be followed as well. When a leader commits to a decision that they have made and does not waiver from it, at very least it gives off the appearance of strength. It is human nature to follow the leader who we view as the strongest; the one who we see as giving us the best chance of survival. However, humans also tend to follow leaders who make decisions that they see as most beneficial to them; either out of respect for the leader or fear of something else.
The last type of Servant Leadership is going to be “Elevating Purpose”. “Elevating Purpose” is where a leader prioritizes a larger mission and working towards a shared goal. While the main goal is to get into the State Championships and win, Coach Dale uses this opportunity to work on the players personal development as well. All these practices and games weren’t just about winning, Coach Dale also used these opportunities to teach them teamwork, grit, and to believe in oneself. Servant Leaders are leaders who put others needs above their own. Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez are two examples of a servant leader. Three things that they both have in common are empathy, able to understand others, conceptualization, the ability to dream good for their people, and community building skills. Martin Luther King Jr. had empathy for people who are being discriminated because he was discriminated for his skin color. Being a civil rights leader King was elected to be in charge of the MIA, Montgomery Improvement Association, where he and the black community organized protest against segregation.
Along with being a leader, adaptability and the ability to change something is an important aspect of of being an effective leader. For example, in a volleyball match, we do not always get a perfect pass or play so we sometimes have to do whatever it takes to just keep the ball in play and get it onto the other side. Being able to change according to what is given is an important trait. However, being able to change one's ways for the better as a whole does not imply backing down to what you believe in or letting others manipulate you into thinking like them. Having the ability to persist and be dependable is the outcome of a strong character and someone who is capable of being a leader for others.
The definition of Servant Leadership as defined by Robert K. Greenleaf states that this is a person who is first a servant, and then a leader. He or she starts from the bottom and works their way up the ladder. These people are often focused other people’s priorities, they often share power with all and they are helping their followers or subordinates develop and mature so they can perform at their best. Jim Lovell is a great example of a servant leader.
Servant leadership can be applied from the top of an organization to the lowest member because no one team member is more important than another. This is because each member is dependent upon the other to accomplish their job. Servant and authentic leaders serve other individuals. They both believe in empowering the employees they serve. The leadership styles possess a high standard of values, displays compassion and passion for integrity to their followers.
Hence, leaders need to be prepared and manage readiness to the alteration by making an environment of honesty and transparency for their team as a successful implementation of the change is unlikely.
