While Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing may seem like a simple comedy at face value, deep themes are hidden below the surface. One of these hidden themes is love creates bonds that are strong enough to overcome every obstacle. This theme is portrayed between multiple characters, including the lovers Hero & Claudio and Benedict & Beatrice, as well as a deep father to daughter relationship between Hero and her father Leonato. When we are first introduced to the lovers Hero and Claudio, we learn that their love is young. Claudio began to have feelings for Hero prior to his leaving for war, but subsided them in order to prepare in the event that he would die. The bond between this father and daughter is so strong that even after Hero is accused of being unloyal as well as participating in certain events before marriage, Leonato tries to believe Hero above the others, and still tries to secure her happiness and innocence if it can be. Following Claudio’s betrayal of Hero at the wedding, Leonato proclaims, “...if they wrong her honor,/ the proudest of them shall well hear of it...they shall find, awaked in such a kind,/ Both strength of limb.../To quit me of them thoroughly” (4.1.191-200). Leonato demands justice for what has been done to Hero, electing to believe Hero’s story instead of Claudio’s. Leonato’s love for his daughter compelled him to ignore the obstacle that now faces them, and moves him to uncover the truth behind Claudio’s claim. When the truth is finally revealed, Leonato tries to salvage Hero’s happiness, telling Claudio, “I cannot bid you bid my daughter live-/...My brother hath a daughter,/ almost a copy of my child that’s dead,/...giver her the right you should have given her cousin…” (5.1.273-285). Leonato tricks Claudio into marrying Hero, making it seem that he will marry his cousin’s daughter to repay Leonato. This act of selflessness proves that the bond of love between Leonato and Hero is strong enough to overcome the worst of obstacles, and is so strong in fact, that it pushes Leonato to secure Hero’s
