In “The Bernie Bomb” by Kimberley Strassel, critical, mocking tones emphasize Strassel’s feelings towards Bernie Sanders’ inability to become the President of the United States. Bernie Sanders gave quite a performance at the first Democratic debate of the year. Strassel shares her thoughts on the nature of his responses to important issues during the debate by concluding that his followers should regret making donations to his campaign seeing that he really is not in it to win. Her witty critiques indicate her strong feelings that donating to Sanders’ campaign in hopes that he will become President, is truly not worth the money. Strassel’s diction heightens the uncertainty and unprofessional manner behind Sanders’ attempt at trying to be elected as President, which leads his supporters to doubt their contribution to his campaign.
In the featured article “Through the fragments of 9/11” written by Megan Boehnke, describes how Amy Mundorff became New York’s first Forensic Anthropologist. However, the story she tells about her journey is not how typically one would think. Mundorff was personally affected by the 9/11 tragedy that happened in New York 2001. It was her job to identify the remains that were left behind. Amy Mundorff is a mother, a wife, and most importantly New York's first forensic anthropologist.
She imposes a syllogism of “If parties prefer to postpone action longer and thus do battle with this idea, they challenge the inevitable. The idea will not perish; the party which opposes it may…Can you afford the risk?” In some way, this seems to be a threat towards the politicians. If they delay action any longer, they jeopardize their careers, or even their lives. Being politicians, they are assumed to be passionate and dedicated to their job.
When one establishes a connection with their audience, it becomes easier to talk about personal and controversial things just as when she talked about what her husband has gone through regarding his citizenship and religious affiliation. She then implies that Donald Trump is immature and inexperienced to become the president; she reinforces this idea when she subtly implies Donald Trump’s “tendency to lash out” as well as him having an empty record of “public service”. The presidential election in 2016 has definitely been one to remember. A woman won a nomination and Donald Trump became the presidential nominee for the United States of America. Chris Matthews, who is a political commentator, wrote a book titled Hardball: How Politics is Played Told by One Who Knows the Game. This book lists several maxims, or rule of conduct, that he believes politicians use the most. A few of them seem obvious, like positioning or keeping your enemies in front of you.

The column “We Have to Do Something” written by syndicated columnist Ben Shapiro, is the second column I have read from his various works. I picked this column because it is relevant to a current ongoing debate. Within the last years school shootings have become very prominent. This topic being as controversial as it is, is bound to have many opinions. In his op ed piece Shapiro goes into great detail about the gun control debate.
The use of Logos, Pathos, and Ethos made this speech more moving to the audience, the majority of it being pathos. Hillary discussed the issues women suffer through and the excruciatingly painful experiences women have endured. Hillary used tactics that allowed her to related to women, since she is one herself. She aims to encourage people to halt the violations on women's rights.
Clinton attempts to use propaganda, empathy, and logic to present her point, that women to her audience, and succeeds at it. Overall, the speech is balanced in its argument style and use of rhetoric, such as the factors mentioned above. Hillary Clinton’s main purpose is to explain everyone how women’s rights are human rights. This is stated clearly as main claim and a conclusion in her speech. “If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights once and for all” (Clinton). She supports her main claim through inductive logic by giving examples of what women are suffering from. Clinton mentions about how the society is violating women’s right by stating how women are being set on fire, raped, abused, which is against the human rights.
