Hillary Clinton is known as an outstanding First Lady of the United States, Senator of New York, Secretary of State and the first women to be a Presidential candidate. But behind all of these accomplishments, she’s also had many previous successes in her early life and education. To start off, Hillary Rodham Clinton was born on October 26, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. Park Ridge, Illinois, a suburb in Chicago, was where Hillary was raised as a child. She was the oldest daughter of Hugh Rodham, her father, who was a successful fabric store owner, and her mother Dorothy Emma Howell Rodham. King, after hearing a speech in Chicago by him, she became interested in working in public service and eventually became a democrat in 1968. Regarding her education in her early life, Hillary graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in 1969 in political science as well as several other honors given to her. Such a college was known to be a high-end all-women’s college found in Massachusetts. College served as an important factor to Clinton that influenced her political opinions. When she first arrived at college she was shy and not much of a talker, however she ended up serving as the president of the College Republicans. During her time at Wellesley, she was very engaged in campus politics, such actions and many more allowed her to be recognized as a strong leader and she was soon asked to give the commencement address. It was during this address that Clinton managed to reach National News when she spoke about the Vietnam War, making her quite a celebrity. However, a major event that impacted her life was the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. Thus, Clinton organized a two-day student strike. Quite surprisingly, Hillary traveled to more than 80 countries, one of them being Beijing, China, where she said, “Human rights are women’s rights, and women’s rights are human rights.” This was a major step towards promoting women’s rights globally. As first lady, Hillary also founded several programs such as the “Save America’s Treasures” program to save historic items and sites. In 2000, Hillary Clinton was elected as a United States Senator for New York. Here, she worked day and night to get $21.4 billion in funding for Ground Zero, most commonly known as the site of the 2001 terrorist attack on 911. The money raised was used for cleanup, as well as providing health services for first responders and volunteers. She also was interested in the education side of the country, funding to renovate and modernize public schools. In early 2007, Hillary campaigned for the Democratic nomination for the presidency. Unfortunately, however, she was defeated by Barack Obama. Obama though named her as his Secretary of State when he won the presidential election.
