The first ship to be quarantined in Spring Cove was the convict ship the Bussorah Merchant for an outbreak of smallpox. The convicts and their guards were housed in tents on shore.
History Vocab Chapter 2 1. Mesopotamia- comes from two greek words meaning “the land between the two rivers”. These rivers were the Tigris and Euphrates. This is where modern day iraq is. It is important because the rivers provided the first cultivators with irrigation which led them to a food surplus.

According to the author it was a small space took by the local activist from the university of Berkley which failed to improve it after “demolish some houses”(5). According to the author they created a space that would bring more people to join their causes. The author describes this action the “beginning of the end of the student movement”. For the extremist activists it was a military battle against the citizen that they were supposed to defend.

Many people are remembered for their influence on history. Looking through the history books you can find an endless list of names that have brought our nation to where it is now. George Washington was the first to lead the nation. Henry Ford revolutionized the factory and helped turn the nation mobile. However, those who worked in the shadows are often not as prominent in the minds of individuals.
Information of the past is useless unless it is able to be updated, advanced, or applied to life as we know it. Imagine the world 3,000 years ago when rhetoric began to grow and evolve; what was life like back then? As the “Father of History”, Herodotus holds a status of academic immortality, and through his work we have a foundation for how to keep record of history for future generations to know and almost place themselves in those times. What reading Clio has reminded me of is the importance of history to the world, and how this book and its eight brethren were the blueprints for all future historical writings. History is something that grows every day. Every second that passes turns into history. There are many periods of history that are thought to be special among people. These special times are caused by things that were important and caused an impact on people. The impact these things had on people usually affected the people’s way of life.
Historians have always debated whether humans or historical forces causes great historical changes. One of the humans who effected history was Themistocles, Themistocles was a great Athenian general and politician. When Themistocles was elected archon in 492 B.C., he convinced the Athens to make their naval power stronger. Themistocles helped Greeks defeat the Persian Empire in the Battle of Marathon, the Battle of Artemisium, and in the Battle of Salamis. Themistocles’ decision to build Triremes, to interpret the Oracle’s message, and to fight the Battle of Salamis demonstrates that human are the cause of great historical changes.
The study of AP United States History will provide a much greater understanding of how our country came to rise. Because I have been studying United States history since 8th grade, learning more material will certainly enhance my knowledge of United States history. Through reinforcement by previously learned material, as well as learning new material, this study will give me a great insight to my understanding of how our country evolves. Moreover, having a knowledge of United States History will prepare me for future endeavors, as the study of history is essential to move forward in society. We, as citizens, should begin to use previous tactics to build upon new tactics in today’s worldly affairs.

History is all around, it is happening. Sima Qian and Herodotus realized that and recorded the life around them. They knew that what happens today will shape both the future and the past, and that the history of before shapes the future. Sima Qian and Herodotus were the founding fathers of history, making sure that we could look back and see what had happened and to not repeat any mistakes that were led.
This is exactly the question that Italian writer Italo Calvino attempts to answer in his essay, ‘Why Read the Classics’. In the essay, Calvino writes about the classics and their importance to the modern world, such as the ability to think critically. I agree with Calvino that the classics are meant to make us think. The term classic is much disputed as many hold different ideas of what a classic is or is not. In Italo Calvino’s essay, ‘Why Read the Classics’, he attempts to define the classics by giving a total of fourteen definitions.
