The batter steps into the batter's box. There’s two outs and there’s runners on second and third. The game is tied and with one hit the batter can send his team to victory and feel everlasting glory. The first pitch comes and it’s right in the batter's wheelhouse. The batter swings and hits a blazing fast line drive into the left center gap.. Both runners run as fast as the can and the batter's team wins as he hits the walk off double. Major League Baseball batters have roughly 0.40 seconds to determine what type of pitch the pitch is, determine if the pitch is a ball or strike, determine the speed of the pitch, finish their stride and put their foot down, and attempt to successfully hit the ball. Keeping their eye on the ball makes these tasks more simple. Hitting a baseball is a complex task and one’s vision plays a big part in whether or not they can hit the ball. Although one does not need 20/20 vision to hit the ball they do need to keep sharp focus on the ball in order to hit the ball. Keeping their undivided attention on the ball helps the player see the rotation, and see where the ball is going in order to hit it. The batting stance is what makes a hitter capable of hitting the ball. There are three generic batting stances: Open, square, and closed. An open batting in when the hitters legs are spread apart with a lot of space between them. A square stance is when the batters front leg is spread off to the side so the hitter’s legs have a lot of space in between them. And closed batting stance is when the hitter’s legs are not spread apart and they have very little space in between their legs. All of these examples are good stances that work for all hitters young or old.
