Take Me Out to the Ball Game
In the state of Georgia, there are thousands of baseball fans that enjoy the fresh air of the open field and the taste of salty peanuts. “Take me out to the ballgame” might become a simpler task in the near future for Braves fans that live in the Cobb County area. One of the biggest things that I think of when I hear baseball is the huge stadium, filled with thousands of people. More importantly I think of Turner Field, the Brave’s current stadium located in Atlanta.
Turner field was built in 1996 to host the 1996 summer Olympics, and the stadium shows off its Olympic history with landmarks that are recognizable from the Olympics. Fans from all over Georgia and many other states travel to Atlanta to come see the Braves play in their beautiful stadium. Turner Field created an electric atmosphere that allowed the athletes to perform at their best ability, but as the years have passed the crowds have died down. One article noted that in 2001 “THERE WERE 10,000 empty seats at Turner Field as the Braves finished off the Astros in the divisional round”(Lake). The new stadium is said to include many new and improved features including new state of the art technology, and a huge hospitality center. The SunTrust stadium will also be about 20% smaller than the Braves original stadium. Fans fear that with the smaller space will create a problem with crowding, but the Brave’s employees seem to be confident in their actions as they state “We do not discount the concerns appellants have raised about the wisdom of the stadium project and the commitments Cobb County has made to entice the Braves to move there”(Sigo).
