Pursuing a graduate degree in homeland security will greatly enhance my ability to move into an executive position within the Waco Fire Department. I have over 25 total years in the fire service with over 9 years at the command level. Over the span of my career, I have worked in a variety of different departments and different settings. One constant that has remained over the course of my career is that I have constantly improved myself through education, not only to improve myself, but to improve the service I provide to the community that I serve. A master’s degree in homeland security would complement my Bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration and Management. Homeland Security is the mission of the fire service and this degree is the next logical step towards executive leadership in the fire service. Looking at the fire service in terms of fire and medical responses would be short-sighted; as the modern fire service is an all-hazards response organization with domestic preparedness should be elevated higher within our mission. Preparing and planning of incidents that could happen to my jurisdiction and regional is vital for a leader in the homeland security field. Because of participation on many regional response teams the potential exists to have a large response area. Studying homeland security would assist not only our organization, but also aid with regional partners. Historically Waco has a history of not only recent, but also potential future homeland security events. Baylor University is the largest Baptist university in the United States, generating several threats against the school. Interstate 35 runs through the city carrying cargo along the “NAFTA” highway. Texas is one of the fastest growing states in the
