Homelessness can be defined as “the state of having no home.” This problem affects poor members of our societies who cannot afford to pay for a place to live. Since the 1980s, Canada’s affordable housing has decreased along with pension and social services benefits levels. In Canada we have experienced an increase in population and lower wages, the minimum wage in Canada has not been at the same level as the inflation rate. This has made the homelessness situation a big problem in Canada. People who experience homelessness in Canadian include men, women, families with children, youth, older adults and seniors, veterans, and Indigenous people. Although building affordable housing and finding solutions to drug related problems are positive solutions to the problem of homelessness, the best solution is making sure the cost of living is not going up too much and people are not living in poverty. 80% of people experiencing homelessness are temporarily homeless due to sudden changes in their lives. (Know Homelessness, 2023). When people lose their jobs, they find that they cannot pay their bills anymore and they lose their homes because they can not pay mortgages. When people can’t afford to buy food and all the things they need to survive they end up on the street, so they need the government to help by controlling the cost of living. This solution is the best solution because if the cost of living is down a lot of homeless people will not experience homelessness, they will be able to afford the things they need to survive.
