A homogenous society is a society that enjoys a shared culture, language or ethnicity and its people abide by social norms or traditions. A homogeneous society lacks diversity and can be viewed as being resistant to changes. In reality, it is almost impossible to find a country that is homogeneous. In this post, we will consider if Japan today is inclining towards being a homogenous society or otherwise by observing the attitudes and behaviour of the general Japanese population and the government towards changes and differences. To discuss if Japan is a homogeneous society today, we will need to consider the factors that could possibly cause the change in homogeneity in Japan today and the impacts of such factors on homogeneity today. This principle impacts on both economic and social aspects of Japan. As of present, only 2% of Japan’s population are made up of foreigners. When faced with a labour shortage and declining population due to ageing population and low birth rate, according to a poll by April Yomiuri (Japan’s newspaper for April), the majority would not choose to use migrants as a solution to curb this problem but would choose to use locals as a solution such as increasing female and elderly working population (Burgess,2014). From the government’s end, it remains an arduous task for immigrants to receive the Japanese Citizenship today (Traphagan,2013). The principle effectively aids Japan in achieving relatively high homogeneity socially and possibly economically, preventing the Japanese Nationality or identity that was ‘built’ to not be easily threatened by sudden or high influx of immigrants. Today, there still exists visible evidence of resistance from the public and the government to having and welcoming immigrants in Japan. This attitude towards immigrants may be interpreted as a form of social collective behaviour, indicating that Japan is leaning towards a more homogenous society, one that is resistant to the great diversity of people and would still prefer to maintain a kind of status
