Human beings are reactive in nature. Throughout history, this fact had both aided and hurt us. Matthew Shepard was a case in which this tendency hurt us. On the night of October 6th, 1998, Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, brutally beaten, and robbed, tied to a fence and left to die. Once Matthew Shepard was murdered for being gay, the town of Laramie reacted, mostly with love and support.
In the story drinking coffee elsewhere the author ZZ Packner allows the reader to believe that the main character is trying to understand her sexual and racial identity but in reality the story is not about race or sexual preference, passably as metaphors for the actual problem of conceiving an authentic self. The author allows the reader to believe that Dina is exploring her sexuality as a way to transition into fitting into a group but in actuality it is a coping mechanism. Dina uses this strategy of pretending to deflect her real issue with finding her identity and where she belongs in this world. Dina is not at all gay but by the author labeling her as that she is able to metaphorical show that Dina being gay allows her to focus on being apart of something she knows so well.

People say Ruby Fruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown is a picaresque novel, and I would agree with that statement. Molly is the appealing hero in this book, even if not everyone notices. She takes her life into her own hands, by not wanting to be what every other women wants to be and that’s a house wife. Molly would rather be a film maker, the next president, or a lawyer, which is all things women are not commonly found. This hero goes through many rough things in these first nine chapter, and the first one is being part of a family that is not biologically hers’.

As a result, it brings up the discussion whether this population of people is trying to fit in with societal norms.
In October of 2013, Beavercreek High School staged a production of the play Almost, Maine. Almost, Maine is comprised of nine stand-alone stories including a prologue, interlogue and epilogue. One of the stories, entitled They Fell, is between two men, Randy and Chad, who realize their love for each other. When auditions were held in September, Randy and Chad were not included on the cast list. The director was in the process of persuading the principle and school board to allow the scene when he had cast it.
By having a lesbian relationship in the text, it shows representation and the normalcy of having a relationship with someone of the same sex. The two girls obviously care about each other; Anne is very concerned for Diana’s health when she accidently gets drunk. If we read it as queer, their relationship is positive and healthy, which provides great representation for queer relationships. It also shows that children have some innate understanding of what person they are attracted to, without understanding what “lesbian” or “queer” means. One of the disadvantages of reading the text as a lesbian relationship would be negating the importance of close female friendship.

In the past and in modern-day, American homosexuals and heterosexuals get scrutinized and disgraced because of their opinions in groupthink and towards one another.
