Honors College Luncheon With Firoozeh Dumas

The campus experience I chose to attend was the Honors College Luncheon with Firoozeh Dumas. I wanted to attend this luncheon to learn more about the author of our common reading book Laughing Without an Accent. When I read the book this past summer, I was amazed at how the author was able to portray so many unique cultures and objectively compare and contrast them. She transcended cultural boundaries using short humorous anecdotes. After finding out that we could attend a luncheon and ask the author questions, I was excited to see and listen to what she had to say. During the luncheon, a student asked Dumas on her opinion about studying abroad. She responded with it was something that all students should participate in as it helped them to gain a better understanding of the world. It helps students to develop a more open-minded approach towards like as they are immersed in cultures that are often very different from their own. I had always thought about studying abroad, but mainly to be able to see some of the tourist sites outside of the United States. Dumas reminded me that studying abroad is most importantly for learning and immersing yourself in another culture through language, cuisine and customs. Moreover, as I thought about studying abroad, I realized how essential speaking another language can be. Throughout high school I took 3 years of French and enjoyed it, but thus far have not signed up for any French classes. Dumas also gave the advice to students at the luncheon that we should all take a foreign language while in college. It can be helpful in studying abroad as well as beneficial in achieving a versatile education in college. Overall, all the students and faculty who attended this luncheon seemed to be captivated by creating an environment on campus that fostered cultural and global
