Pertinent biographical information on author (must include a citation that matches the Work Cited page): William Golding was born September 19, 1911, in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. In 1935 he started teaching English and philosophy in Salisbury. He temporarily left teaching in 1940 to join the Royal Navy. In 1954 he published his first novel, Lord of the Flies. In an attempt to recreate the culture they left behind, they elect Ralph to lead, with the intellectual Piggy as counselor. But Jack wants to lead, too, and one-by-one, he lures the boys from civility and reason to the savage survivalism of primeval hunters. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding gives the readers a look of the savagery that underlies even the most civilized human beings.
Four main characters (with 1-2 sentence description of each--focus on a character twist):
Ralph: Ralph is the leader of the children, and has an instinct of standing up for others and paving the way for his group.
Jack: Jack is the crazy one in the group, he is in charge of the hunters who hunt and kill for food. However later in the story he is a natural born killer, and represents the beast beneath all of us.
Piggy: Piggy represents the intelligence of the group, and is a main key to the children's survival on the Island. In addition Piggy is unathletic, and is not very good when it comes to any physical activities, but he has the brains.
Simon: Simon was the innocent one of the group he was kind to everybody in the novel. However was a little crazy in the mind as …show more content…

Beach: The beach was where the kids landed on the Island, and is the location of death.
Forest: The forest was a creepy escape route for the kids, but was also a place where they hunted and killed their food.

Two symbols (with quotes) and explanations of their significance:
Hope: “The fire is the most important thing on this island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck”(Golding 81). This signifies the importance of the fire in the novel, it was all the kids ever had to get out of their stranded situation.
Humanity: “His specs-use them as burning glasses”(Golding 40). This represents the restoration of humanity which was when the kids had no idea what to do to get the fire started the glasses brought their ego back, and quickly restored humanity.
