During the Great Depression, the housing crisis forced the homeless to create encampments in shack towns known as Hooverville. The shacks were tiny and poorly built. Hoovervilles, named after President Herbert Hoover, were a visible symbol of poverty and the economic struggles faced by the American people during this time.People living in these communities lacked access to necessities such as running water, electricity, and sanitation facilities. As a result, they suffered from illnesses and diseases that were easily preventable. Today, with our economy growing, we tend to think of Hoovervilles as a thing of the past. However, politics and affordable housing policies often come with challenges. In inadequate political systems, politicians engage in corrupt practices, resulting in delayed or misplaced affordable housing funding. Additionally, not all politicians are supportive of affordable housing policies due to the potential economic impacts on developers and the voting base. Still, politicians who aim at promoting affordable housing should prioritize collaboration with advocacy groups, non-governmental organizations, and community stakeholders to foster inclusive and sustainable affordable housing policies. As mentioned previously, shack towns in Hooverville are horrible facts of the past; but politicians can point out that they were "affordable housing”. To be clear, affordable housing should provide safety, privacy, and stability and it should be given with no conditions. That is why “The Housing First” is an excellent idea.
