Hope is a thing that everyone has in different religions with different or similar meaning. In our daily interactions, we use the word hope frequently and view hope as a virtue or an emotion; however, emotions are not the primary elements of hope, instead, “goal-directed thoughts are the core of hope,” (“Hope: The Imperative Human Motive”). According to How We Hope, hope is defined as a “combination of the desire for an outcome and the belief that the outcome is possible but not certain.” (Martin 11-12) For example, in the novel, the Hunger Games in District 12 foods is the hope of freedom from hunger; Katniss Everdeen would go out into the wood beyond the fence (the safety bound) and hunted, hoping she is back with food on her hands. Ever since Katniss father passed away, her mom didn’t do anything. She couldn’t take care of them because her mom was still upset (Collins 26). So, she became the head of the house, which leads Katniss to go look for food, cook and take care of her sister and her so that they would look the same as everyone in the community. If the district found out that her mom couldn’t take care of them they would be taken away from their mom and placed in the community home. Her hope for her sister Prim was that she doesn’t want to see her sister to be filled with sadness and anger like other kids that has been taken away (Collins 27).
