James Anderson’s The Education of Blacks in the South, 1860-1935 discusses the creation and black devotion to education. Anderson argues that contrary to popular belief, blacks laid the foundation for their education, and even though others sought to control the system, blacks still fought for their own education the way they saw fit. He also argues that there has been pivotal relationship between education and oppressed groups—American education has always funded education for all (Anderson, 1988, p.5). I believe Anderson argues this through opposition, emancipation, and fighting low standards. Anderson begins the monograph with discussion of the postwar South and how they were hostile to the idea of black schooling.
While an impoverished young man named Horace Mann was school-aged in the early 1800s, he mostly taught himself from books in the local library. Eventually he went to college and became a lawyer and state senator. Mann helped establish the Massachusetts Board of Education, and he became its secretary. This was the first such board in the nation. Mann introduce the following six principles of education, many of which were controversial at the time: (1) Universal education is necessary because citizens cannot enjoy both freedom and ignorance.

Teachers should be trained…. Children should be required to attend school. They didn’t go into action until 1820 between 1850 when they opened colleges and special needs schools. There was a uprise for education in the North that not everyone in the South had. Most children didn’t go to school because families thought that the job they needed to do was farming, which didn’t require any type of education at all.

One problem still stood and that was that many children did not have any access to education. A Massachusetts lawyer by the name of Horace Mann, led movements to try to create new common schools for all children. Mann believed that available public education for children of every social class would revive social equality and give them an equal chance to excel in social mobility. It was called The Common School Period because education transformed from a completely private, costly thing to a luxury that was available to the common masses. With public education, social class separation was not as extreme as it had been in the past, but still continued to occur in some areas. The people in the lower classes originally gained minimal instruction, such as learning how to read and write, calculate, and receive religious instruction, while the upper classes were more entitled to pursuing a higher education in secondary schools and even continue their schooling at the university level. When people become educated, it allows them to develop different perspectives and would not only see an improvement in their life, but in society as a whole. There’s no doubt that education is the most important thing to enhance the lives of individuals. Without it, kids aren’t able to reach their full potential, causing citizens to experience major issues in life such as a low standard of living, ignorance, and among other things. Education should be free for everyone, regardless of their economic background, because every individual is important and should have the equal opportunity to better themselves.
