Hostage negotiations has to do with psychology, and to have a successful crisis negotiation team that understands that and are highly trained for these situations. The typical scenario, all hostages lives are or will be at high risk of death from the hands of a delusional, depressed, suicidal, drug fueled person. This normally takes place in an uncontrolled environment like a workplace or a family home. These type of crisis situations could end up taking hours or days to resolve, intense and much focused people with great skilled communications in crisis intervention will be needed. This person makes sure the perimeters are established along with traffic control. They will also be the negotiators and the tactical team’s liaison with any medical or community services needed.
Negotiator and Secondary Negotiator: These people have to learn patience, listening, understanding, caring and the power of persuasion. They will have to learn how to develop how to get people to do what they want without challenging them or making them resist or want to fight. The training for this will be very intense and will take a lot of practice and skill.
Intelligence Officer: This person’s job will be to gather vital information on all hostages and the suspect this will include family members or any past/present criminal, mental history. They will search for demographics or any relationships between the hostages and the hostage taker. They will retrieve any information that could help the negotiations.
Communications Officer: This officer will have the sole responsibility of keeping contact with all agencies and person’s important to this crisis. This could include medical services, local electric companies, firefighters, public transportation, cell and land line companies, media and businesses in the
