In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and the film The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann, there are numerous characters introduced. Three characters introduced into the novel and film are Jay Gatsby, Tom Buchanan, and Daisy Buchanan. Both men loved Daisy, and she loved them also; and this had to do with the fact that they were alike and different in many aspects. Gatsby and Tom had enormous wealth, high status, and shared the fact they were both in love with Daisy, While they both shared the same wealth, Gatsby had to work his way up to get his fortune, while Tom was born into his money.

To begin, throughout the two varying novels Tom Buchanan, from The Great Gatsby, and Baba, from the Kite Runner, share many similarities. In the Great Gatsby, Tom Buchanan is depicted as a man full of wealth and power. As Nick Carraway, the narrator of the novel, states, he is a “sturdy, straw-haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner” with “two shining, arrogant eyes” and “a body capable of enormous leverage—a cruel body” (Fitzgerald, 7). As Nick meticulously describes Tom, his powerful and indomitable image is presented considerably. From the way Nick describes his muscular build, rigid manner and superior eyes, it is evident Tom Buchanan demonstrates a greater status and importance to those among him.
Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby are two main characters in the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Gatsby and Tom are similar in many ways but Gatsby is a better character because he cares for people and their feelings. Jay Gatsby, or James Gatz, finished his life as a well-known, eccentric, and extremely wealthy man. Not much was known about Jay Gatsby to most, but everyone knew that he always hosted wild parties at his gothic, luxurious mansion. Tom Buchanan was also a very rich many, but his personality was drastically different than Gatsby’s. Tom was not very outgoing and was recognized as a brute and a bully by most people, so he really did not have a lot of close friends.

During most of the story, readers heard about Tom and Gatsby very differently. We’ve heard about both their personalities, flaws, and ostentatious belongings. Throughout the story, both characters display their loyalty and secret relationships they have with others.
In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, there are many important characters, some alike and some different. Two characters who are both different and alike at the same time are Tom Buchanan and George Wilson. Fitzgerald gives the reader a lot of information about how Tom and George are very different from each other. One can interpret many different things that Fitzgerald may be trying to convey about the nature of men. Based on how he portrays Tom and George’s actions it helps to show the true nature of men.
When Gatsby met Nick he was finally able to reach Daisy. Gatsby had asked Nick to invite Daisy to tea and allow himself to join their event. Gatsby prepared the whole arrangement, from food to decorations. When Daisy arrived Gatsby was overwhelmed and embarrassed by their meeting. But soon the two became close once more chit chatting the world away.
Gatsby later tries to reconnect with Daisy, much to the dismay of Tom. Fitzgerald utilizes the characters of Gatsby and Tom to create parallels and highlight certain characteristics in both men. Tom and Gatsby are similar in that they both are very wealthy and love Daisy, each in their own way. While they share this similarity, there are a myriad of differences between the two. Tom is a racist, is part of the old money society, and does not face judgement for his actions.
In The Great Gatsby, we learn more and more about the characters, Gatsby and Nick, as the story unravels deeper. Although these characters seem to have many differences, they have more in common than recognized. Throughout the novel, we see some corresponding traits between Gatsby and Nick. Despite these two having somewhat indistinguishable attitudes towards women and desires, they differ in their class, and their outlook and temperament. Gatsby and Nick in a way have the same desire and approach towards women.
Their relationship slowly grows over time, and Mr. Gatsby reveals to Nick that he is in love with Daisy Buchanan, Nick’s cousin. Unfortunately there is a slight complication, Daisy is already settled down with a family and her husband Tom Buchanan, a very wealthy and
Jay Gatsby, the title character of the novel “The Great Gatsby” is a man that can not seem to live without the love of his life. Trying to win Daisy over consumes Gatsby’s life as he tries to become the person he thinks she would approve of. What most readers do not realize is that Jay Gatsby’s character mirrors many personality traits and concerns that the author of novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald, had.
