Alivea Luning Mr.Stephens English 2 Honors 03/27/24 In the story, The Great Gatsby, characters Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby are what some might describe as the opposite, but yet the same. During most of the story, readers heard about Tom and Gatsby very differently. We’ve heard about both their personalities, flaws, and ostentatious belongings. Throughout the story, both characters display their loyalty and secret relationships they have with others. Tom and Gatsby show their dramatic, never ending love for Daisy and how determined they are to have her. We also might not know where they got it, but Tom and Gatsby frequently show/mention their stable finances. With this being said, no character can be fully trusted without factual proof. Both characters were equally loyal to each other throughout the book. Tom was loyal to Nick by telling him about his “secret mistress” he was seeing in the Valley Of Ashes, and even took Nick with him to see his “woman in New York” (Fitzgerald, 15). Gatsby was also loyal to Nick by telling him about his love for Daisy and his plan to get her back. Although the characters may both be loyal during some parts of the book, I believe that Gatsby is more loyal to the other characters because he tells each character exactly what he wants, unlike Tom. Everybody even goes to “Gatsby’s house in the summer” for his annual party’s he hosts each year (Fitzgerald, 41). Gatsby is the type of person who tells you the small details of a situation, instead of just the main idea like Tom does. This provides a huge perspective change on the characters.
