I will answer the following questions in this essay, What components make up an atom, How can periodic trends be explained, and what happens when electrons in atoms are absorb or release energy. I am going to use the electron configuration pogil, the marble game activity, and photons and lasers game. The first question I will answer is, What components make up an atom? To answer this question I am going to use the marble activities we did in class. In the activity we created elements using marbles that were representations of Protons, Electrons, and Neutrons. The objective of the game was to see which person could get rid of all their marbles first. We used a periodic to see what isotopes we could get using the three particles in an atom. The game answers this question because marbles are a good way to represent the components in an atom. According to Science Online ”Gothard, Lisa Quinn, and Joe Rosen. “Atomic Structure.” Encyclopedia of Physical Science ” negatively charged particles called electrons surround the subatomic particles, …show more content…
To answer this question I will use the electron configuration pogil we did in class. According to science online ‘“Gothard, Lisa Quinn, and Joe Rosen. “Periodic Trends.” Encyclopedia of Physical Science”’ periodic trends occur do to the chemical and physical properties of the elements based on their position on the table. In the electron configuration pogil, it tells you how many electrons are in the outer orbital just by the column of the graph an element is in. For example oxygen has six electrons in its outer layer because it is located in the sixteenth group or the sixth group if you exclude the transition metals. One could have written out the electron configuration and take the time out of their day or he/she could just find oxygen on the periodic table and see it is in group six. That’s means that it’s has six electrons in the outer
