Chemistry 1051 Portfolio Over my time in chemistry 1051, I have learned many valuable lessons, and skills. Accurate recording of data was one of those skills, as was creating a well-organized lab write up that correctly laid out the process we completed. During the very first lab we were also given the task of creating our own method to test the density of a peace of glass. We decided to both measure and weigh the glass, effectively testing the density, and afterwards critiquing both methods and choosing the most effective one. This demonstrated our ability to both create a solution, and correctly interpret the task at hand. In the second lab, Introduction to General Chemistry, An Experimental Tour, we were asked to accurately record data, …show more content…

We were asked to correctly communicate these findings as we tested each of the substances she had encountered with both water and hexane. In experiment number three, The Relationship Between the Volume of a Gas and the Temperature, we where given a list of materials and asked to come up with our own procedure, which we did using zip lock bags filled with air, and submerged fully in a measured amount of water in order to find the volume, and then the change in volume when the temperature of the water was increased. In the fourth experiment we were asked to find the temperature of heated water, based on the cold and warm water. The experiment also required that each section be preformed several times in order to ensure accuracy, and also asked that the experimental responsibilities be split up between lab partners, each doing a section of the testing. This gave us an opportunity to work together with our fellow lab partners, with no one person doing the bulk of the work. Our latest lab covered a detailed description of atoms and molecules, laid out in a distinctive way using balls and sticks for valence electrons and bonds. We were given charts to fill out recoding our findings regarding several molecules and their electron count, type of bonds, …show more content…

Our first method was to weigh the glass by putting it in a graduated cylinder of water and placing the glass inside and to observe the lever to with the water rose after first recording the original state of the water. The second test we preformed was to measure the glass and use it’s dimensions to determine the density. This procedure taught me how problem solve effectively and scientifically using information I previously learned in both chemistry and mathematics and applying it to this problem. This also gave me the ability to test the effectiveness of my experiment and decide which one was more proficient at producing an accurate test of the density of the glass. We continuously referred back to the original request of the experiment, making sure our goals aligned with the problem at hand, determining
