Fried also presents an analysis of individuals' reactions to rap music lyrics. Fried argues that individuals have a tendency to view rap music lyrics in a more negative light than they do other genres of music. To support this, Fried conducted an experiment in which she provided individuals with lyrics from rap, country, and rock songs. The subjects then rated the lyrics on a number of criteria, including appropriateness and quality. Fried found that when compared to the other genres, rap was rated significantly lower on both criteria.

The song I choose to analyze as poetry is J. Cole’s song “Hold It Down”. This song is from his mixtape The Warm Up, which is my favorite mixtape by him. This song is produced and written by J. Cole whose real name is Jermaine Lamarr Cole. He produces his own songs and writes them himself, which is one of the reasons why he is my favorite rapper. Whenever I am having a bad day, I always find myself listening to this song.
James Baldwin will be the first poet/author I want to focus on. James Baldwin is a very accomplished man. A social activist, who has fought alongside Martin Luther King Jr, Malcom X , and other predominate figure during the Civil Rights Movement. A person whose experience can be shown through their literature. What I love about Baldwin is his use of allegory, motifs and figurative language to liven up the stories, and add another layer of depth to it.
Rap artist like Lil wayne are examples of rap without poetry. Lil Wayne may be a bad artist; but his rap it shouldn 't justify all rap. He basically speaks of things not most people can relate to. He speaks on things we can 't afford like a driveway full of expensive cars or a house full of naked women. Although his rap may be completely R rated doesn 't mean all rap has to be.
“GRAHHHH, guns…drugs…violence.. murder…!!!” This is what most people believe black rap music consists of. Although this is true to an extent, it reinforces stereotypic and derogatory perceptions. Famous Black Artist, Tupac proves this point of mine. Tupac Shakur was a black artist, activist, actor, poet, and philosopher who was mainly known for his “gangsta rap” style. By “gangsta rap” I mean his rap was related to his ghetto life on the streets.
Society, for centuries, has revered poetry for its beauty, philosophy, and unique capability to reveal truth to the individual. Evidence or Art - a. The Usage of Rap Lyrics in Court In the recent trial of rapper Young Thug, the use of his lyrics as potential evidence has reignited the ongoing debate of whether lyrical content should be admissible in court. This dilemma goes back to the early 1990s when rap lyrics were first introduced as evidence in criminal trials. One of the first significant occurrences was in 1994 during the case of the famous rapper Tupac Shakur, whose lyrics were used by prosecutors to argue his involvement in a shooting.
What was the youth rebellion in the 1960’s? The youth rebellion was a time where the young wanted to be free. Young adults started to rebel and disobeying their parents. Rap music is an expression of one’s feelings thorough poetry and instrumental. Although it has gained many accomplishments throughout society, it is still one of the most criticized genres of music. Rap music dose not promote violence; it only depicts the destruction that is happening all over America. Music should not be criticized based on its style. Rap music receives a variety of brutal critic from critics attacking the lyric that rappers use.
Since the beginning of its creation in 1970 rap music has always been judged. People think of rap in a negative way because of the subjects it normally references. In some cases this is understandable but in most cases it is not. Rap just like any other form of music is a way to express thoughts and feelings that not everyone can relate to but this doesn’t mean individuals should be able to criticize the music and its listeners based off the lyrical content. Rap music has always been an intriguing topic in society.
