Throughout American history, presidents have had a critical role in shaping our society. President Abraham Lincoln started out as a salesman in the 1860s but eventually became one of the most recognized presidents in American society. Lincoln served as president during one of the most turbulent periods in this country. Slavery and the civil war was a prevalent factor and there was severe pressure bestowed upon Lincoln's term. Although Abraham Lincoln ultimately ended the war between the North and South, he was assassinated. As a direct result of his assassination, America people suffered and the reconstruction of the country was set back.

It was a black-white world and although there was no war the country was nowhere near where Lincoln wanted it. Schools, bathrooms, buses, and restaurants were all places where whites and blacks were separated and clearly the blacks got the worst as a result of this segregation. They were often treated unfairly and put down as whites were given a special treatment. Lincoln’s goal was to be a nation together and for everyone to be treated equal but his death greatly impacted it and as a result, the nation was just as separated as it was during the Civil War. Many black Americans were also killed in acts of hate because they tried to get the same rights as whites. Finally, in 1963, President Lyndon B. Johnson ended segregation after nearly 100 years.
