How did the Babylonians make their living? How did the Hebrews make their living?
The ancient civilization, Babylonians, farming and harvesting the crops was their primary source of money. Many Babylonian laws were dedicated to ensuring that their fields, in which they use to grow their crops, are protected. For example in the Code of Hammurabi one law states, “If a man has opened his runnel for water, and left it open, and the water has flooded his neighbors field, he shall pay him an average crop” (Code of Hammurabi 1,55). This law states that if someone is reasonable for flooding a crop then he should pay the owner to restore what has been destroyed. Since many laws like this protected farming and crops, it is obviously important to the Babylonians to protect and care for their crops. Farming in this ancient civilization provided food and income to the community. It can be inferred this was how many citizens made a living since many laws revolve around preserving crops. In the Old Testament, one law relays the importance of harvesting the crops and providing food to the less fortunate. It goes like this, “And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest.” This states that when harvesting the field the farmer should leave some on the perimeter to give to the less fortunate. Although this does not state the importance of cropping it does show that they controlled their food supply and provided food to their economy.
