The Document “The Law Code of Hammurabi” we are given a reading of a list of what laws were for Mesopotamians. The document informs us, the readers, know the two hundred and two seven written laws are consider as the most informative about life in Mesopotamia in regards of justice and social regulation concepts. According to the document The Law Code of Hammurabi basic principles of justice, punishment and compensation in Ancient Mesopotamia don’t act appropriate are most likely lead to be killed if they cannot prove their innocents. One example of how they handle common crimes is the first law “if a man accuses another man and charges him with homicide but cannot bring proof against him, his accuser shall be killed” (25). To my understanding as a reader in Mesopotamia the Hammurabi is the king and it’s up to him to make sure the gods are respected, to make justice prevail and abolish the wicked and the evil and among other things to make sure the sun god, Shamash, is above humankind. If one takes from the gods, the palace or disrespect those above them will be sentence to death and shall be killed. The sixth law, “if a man steals valuables belonging to the god or to the palace, that man shall be killed” (25) is an example of those who disrespect their higher being. It also makes it clear slaves are not to be pitied, if you are caught helping the slave escaping out of the main city gates you will be killed. There are many other familiar laws addressing slaves makes me believe slaves were property and it is looked as thievery. An example of this is the fifteenth law, “if a man should enable a palace slave, a palace slave woman, a commoner’s slave, or a comer’s slave woman to through the main city-gate, he shall be killed”
