The Civil War. Louis P. Masur’s book, The civil War: a Concise History, Is a book that gives an overview of the civil war from 18 to 1800, Providing multiple causes an consequences that emerged from the war. The book begins by reviewing the origins of the war. Chapter one covers the issues between northern and southern states and the tension over right and slave possession. The tension created a conflict that raised a number of political, social, and military events that then proceeded into a battle to abolish slavery from the colonies.
During the mid-seventeenth century, the Parliament put upon acts on the colonists, that caused distraught throughout. Due to the Seven Years’ War, it created a huge debt for the British that needed to be taken care of quickly. In order to pay off the debt, the Parliament brought in the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and Tea Act that impacted many colonists’ daily lives negatively. The Molasses Act of 1733 imposed a tax of six pence per gallon on molasses imported from non-British sources to British colonies.

The King started the civil war by raising his standard in Nottingham which automatically meant he didn’t have control of London and wasn’t close enough to contest Parliament for it. This gave Parliament a clear advantage over the King as London held 1 of only 2 main armories in England (then continuing to hold both after the King was denied access to the 2nd in Hull in 1642). Slavery was overall the direct cause of the Civil War. However, many events in the years leading up to the Civil War also contributed to its beginning. Unfair laws such as the Fugitive Slave Act and the Kansas-Nebraska Act contributed by infuriating the Northerners who were against slavery. The Dred Scott decision kept the Southerners happy, but angered the Northerners, furthering the divide between the North and the South. Two other events that led to the Civil War were John Brown’s Raid and the election of 1860, which angered the South.
