Christopher Columbus once said, “Following the light of the sun, we left the old world.” The person who received credit for discovering the New World was Christopher Columbus. During the late 1400’s there were many new explorers trying to find new land, which is called the Age of Exploration. Explorers like Columbus made a big difference to our world today. He was an Italian navigator and explorer who sailed under the flag of Spain to become one of the greatest explorers of all time, who is credited by many for discovering the Americas.
Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. This place was a major seaport for Italy. Since Genoa was a busy seaport, Columbus learned a lot from the many of the sailors. Columbus sailed for the country of Spain to originally go to China. However, Columbus didn’t know the Americas existed. When he settled on the Americas, he thought he was in Asia. He was needing to get to Asia because he was looking for a faster trade route. Spices and silks from India or Asia were being carried through a long water route or by land. Therefore, Columbus thought he could find a better/easier route for people to trade. The results of Columbus’ exploration were that instead of landing on the brinks of Asia he landed on the Bahamian Islands of the Americas. Some of the challenges that Columbus faced while being on his expedition was his crew members were frightened, they didn’t have maps and his ships ran out of food and water for the people on the ships. Disease was also a major challenge that the crew members and others experienced. Another problem Columbus faced while exploring was financial support. He wasn't part of Europe’s richest people, therefore he had to get funding from the Spanish monarchy because expeditions were very
