How Did Dmitri Mendeleev Made The Periodic Table?

744 Words3 Pages

In the 1860’s a man name Dmitri Mendeleev made the periodic table. He discovered most of the elements we used today and based them on the table due to their atomic weight . Unfortunately, while making the table Mendeleev realized there was spaces in the table. But of course Dmitri knew that there was more elements to be found. He predicted four elements : Eka-boron (scandium), eka-aluminium (gallium), Eka-manganese (technetium), and eka-silicon. All of the predicted elements were found. Scandium was discovered in 1879, Gallium was discovered in 1875. Even though, Technetium was discovered in 1937, Eko-silicon was discovered about half a century before. Eko-Silicon was discovered in 1886, when an ore ( a naturally solid material from a metal or valuable mineral) was discovered in a mine near Freiberg,Germany. Silver and sulfur was found In the ore but the rest of the it could not be identified. It was sent to a German Chemist named Alexander Winkler. While he was figuring out what was in the ore, Winkler was a professor at the Freiburg School of Mines. After many tests, he was convinced that it was a new element. He isolated the element and called it Germanium. It was called Germanium because Germania …show more content…

it is one of the rarest elements found in the earth crust to this date. Only 118 tons of germanium are produced daily the two most common minerals of Germanium are argyrodite and germanite. Argyrodite was the element was the mineral that was found in the ore that Winkler said was a new element. Germanite contains about 8% of Germanium. Most Germanium is usually found in zinc ores When they treat to find zinc metal, Germanium may also be found. The elements can be obtained from two mines in U.S. One in Alaska and the other one in Tennessee. The U.S also imports germanium from China, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Russia, Belgium. and other
