Professor John Gabrieli and Michael Anderson, a psychology associate professor at the University of Oregon conducted the experiment. Where 24 people between the ages of 19 and 31 were given 36 pairs of nouns that were not related and asked to memorize them. After a few minutes they were able to remember them. This experiment was documented using a functional magnetic resonance imaging machine to view the brains processes. They were then asked to only remember the first words and forget the pairs while more scans were taken.

He did not believe in free will and posited that all actions are due to unknown and complex mentally unconscious laws. Any attempt to understand these laws can only be made after the fact. Wundt compared psychologists studying free will to historians. Just like historians, to understand mental laws one has to look back after an event has transpired, but through inspecting them closely a psychologist can determine why it happened and what had to transpire beforehand for it to take place.
Summary: Chapter 2 Chapter two dives into the concept of learning. As mentioned in the previous chapter, learning is the study of changes in behavior produced by experience, so when studying learning it is vital to examine how events in the environment change an individual’s behavior. Many scientists consider learning to be a natural phenomenon, they make their case based on four assumptions. The first assumption being that natural phenomena’s do not just happen, but instead they are caused as the result of some other event. The second assumption is that causes precede effects.

Jane Elliott conducted this experiment with her third-grade students which some would say it is too harsh of an exercise for a group that young; She wanted to teach her student that discrimination is wrong which have been a topic they discussed from the first day of school but felt the student would become confused with the fact she just honored Dr. king in the month of February and now she had to explain to them that he was assassinated because of discrimination. Solomon Asch was a consequential pioneer in psychology. In fact, he was deemed to be in the top 50 most influential psychologists in history. He contributed immensely to the study of social psychology. Through a multitude of experiments, Asch added to the significance of the normative social influence, conformity, and the informational social influence in making decisions in a social setting.

While he may not be as popular or well known as psychologists such as Sigmund Freud however, his impact on psychology has been a great one. Zimbardo is a social psychologist most intrigued by people’s relationships, personalities, social cognition etc. He takes a sociocultural approach to psychology meaning that your culture and environment has the most influence on your personality and your behavior. Zimbardo’s most impactful contribution to psychology was his Stanford Prison Experiment that he conducted with a group of volunteer college students in which some interesting results were revealed.
To prove the accuracy of the theory, Hull carried an experiment in 1943, by counting the number of mistakes rats made running through a maze to locate a reward of food. It has been proved that arousal has helped the speed of learning when already conditioned with strong habit strengths, which causes a dominant response.
