Edgar Allan Poe invented and pioneered many a genre, and has been commonly viewed as a genius writer and harsh critic who established the basis for some modern day writing, and based on research many people see him as an important author for today's writing
Edgar Allan Poe has had many contributions to literature most being contributions to a genre, those being science fiction, the detective story and horror. Edgar Allan Poe released the story "The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall" in 1835, it was about a journey to the Moon. When Poe wrote these stories he had added many realistic elements to make the stories more believable. This is how the first science fiction stories were created. Overtime Poe wrote more stories about futurist and scientific technology. Another of his tales "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" a hypnotist mesmerizes a patient and is still able to interact with and talk to him even after the his body has died. This story was believed to be true by many and even referenced in a medical journal. As well these science fiction stories were so believable in his time that he once announced to the New York Sun that a person was able to cross the Atlantic Ocean in only an air balloon, many years before it was first possible. The citizens of New York scrambled to learn all about this journey, but later were informed that it had been a hoax. This fable is now known as "The Balloon Hoax."
